WilTec Warehouse Eschweiler Germany

Winter vacation after 10 weeks of construction

The last 3 weeks before beginning of the holidays once again have been marked by time pressure on the construction site of WilTec Wildanger Technik GmbH, Ernst-Abbe-Str. 2 in Eschweiler.

However, all phases of construction have delivered more than just in time:

  • The company Schlun has laid a concrete channel of approx. 300m and a diameter of 40 cm and 50 cm respectively. There have been made ditches for the supply and so on. It has turned out to be a bit of a challenge because there is a channel to a depth of 5 m whereas at the same time the construction road had to remain open and free for the supply.
  • The roofer has sealed hall 1
  • Within only 9 days, the rails for the Stow Mobile have been assembled by the company Stow Deutschland GmbH

Not least, thanks to the very good coordination of our general contractor Valeres Industriebau GmbH, the concrete could flow on December, 17.

The Company Induplan GmbH, located in our neighbouring town Stolberg has started its works on concrete in the morning of December 17. The final one of the totally 48 concrete mixers has arrived at 7 o´clock p.m. and the last one of the employees of Induplan Industrieböden has left the site at 7 o´clock p.m. on Friday 18.

The floor made of a mirror-smooth concrete has been the last major step in hall 1 and is going to „rest“ now for a period of 28 days. Only then the supply and assembly of the shelving system is going to start, having a weight of 113 tons.

So, WilTec Wildanger Technik GmbH will be able to start the operation of the warehouse in early February, just 4 months after the construction project has been started.

As of 04.01.2016, the outside facilities are measured. At the same time the remaining works on hall 2 are started. The concreting works of hall 2 is planned for January 26, 2016.

Week 6 + 7: WilTec Building project

Week 6 + 7: WilTec Building project

The last 14 days have run by very slowly, the weather was really bad, there has been a lot of rain. The bad storm called “Heini” along with a temperature below 0°C have not turned out to be very helpful with regard to our construction project, however, we are on schedule.

  • The steel construction is done. Hall 1 – the middle section as well as Hall 2 are done.
  • The frontage of Hall 1 is almost done. Hall 2 has already been started.
  • The ground pipes concerning Hall 1 and the middle section have been installed.
  • The steel roof of Hall 1 has been mounted.
  • The loading ramp for the trucks has been set.
  • The scaffold by “Leipertz scaffolding” has been installed for the roofer.

The forthcoming week is going to be hectic and worth for a further report.

  • The underground engineering gets started which means that the construction of the drainage pipes is initiated.
  • The roofer seals the roof of Hall 1.
  • The foundations for the shelving bars are cast.
  • The light bands are supplied and installed …

It is going to be exciting. If there is no bad weather coming up, Hall 1 will be done by Christmas to the effect that the assembly of the shelving system can get started the 2nd week of January 2016.

It was the phrase „That´ll be for the eternity now“ that could be heard for various times in the industrial park area yesterday afternoon. It was Bernd Wildanger who quoted said phrase repeatedly when speaking about the company´s development that he and his brother Frank Wildanger made grow from its beginnings as a “garage business” located in Bergrath to a large internet provider of technical products. “In those days, there have been about 700 internet companies in Germany when we started the foundation of our company in 2001”, he stated yesterday, now it is supposed to be 21.000 ones.

Initially being laughed at when they had taken the initial steps for the distribution of blue LED speedo lights, the company was quickly to transform and develop into one of the leading supplier. Due to the growing demands on the storage capacities there had to be done several relocations – such as from Bergrath to the industrial park area Königsbenden and then finally to IGP, the industrial business park. However, the acquisition of the area located on the road Ernst-Abbe could not be taken for granted. It was Coca-Cola who intended to construct in said place. It wasn´t until last year that the opportunity for WilTec GmbH finally opened up when the American company signalled the sale.

In the industrial business park, the storage capacity of WilTec GmbH keeps being expanded. There are two warehouses with a total area of 3.200 square metres that are being constructed for 3.5 million euros. They are supposed to comprise a total of 6.900 pallet storage places which correspond to approximately 210 completely loaded trucks. For the family company that is about to expand its staff to 45 employees, the inlargement of the storage area means a better control of its purchases. The removal is supposed to take place in March. But is the area in the industrial business park going to prove “for the eternity”? There is still enough space for more warehouses.

Pond-Tipp: Safely through the Winter

Garden-Pond-Tip: Safely through the Winter

Slowly, the days are getting shorter and the autumn season is gradually changing to winter season. During wintertime the fish move to deeper layers of water where they are staying until spring in a kind of hibernation. Their heartbeat slows down to approximately one beat per minute while the metabolic rate comes almost to a complete standstill. Being in hibernation, fish hardly absorb any oxygen and completely renounce any food.

In order to avoid any typical spring diseases the pond inhabitants should be prepared accordingly. The individual proceeding in order to prepare the precious fish for wintertime is easily implemented at low costs.

It is their fat reserves that protect the creatures from cold and physical weakness. These fat reserves should be specifically given before wintertime is starting. Feed the fish by adding small portions several times a day. Make sure that the fish take the food and that there are no remaining particles of fish feed in the water. It is important to administer the required vitamins and minerals during the feeding in order to maintain the special condition. By this means you support the fish to build up their fat reserves, moreover, their metabolism is revitalized. At low temperatures you should only use food which can be easily digested, such as Sanikoi or Staple Prime. Due to the high proportion of wheat germ as well as the added vitamins, this food is perfect for being fed in autumn.

Safely through the Winter

The temperatures in the pond should be checked regularly and if possible, reduced by gradual means. Sometimes the pond inhabitants tend to react in a sensitive way to extreme temperature fluctuations. Even temperature changes of 4°C in the course of 24 hours can be extremely stressful for the creatures. This is why the temperature-regulating measures especially with regard to smaller ponds are important. Smaller ponds tend to cool down rather quickly. Due to their lack of depth it is not ensured that there is a layer with a height of approximately 40 cm and a temperature of about 4°C. It is a fact that at about 4°C the water has its highest density and keeps sinking by its own weight thus ensuring that in a depth of more than 80 cm the survival in winter should be possible without any problems. In a pond volume of more than 30.000 litres, the heat is stored sufficiently in the water and the cooling measurably slowed down. Any intervention is necessary only in extreme weather conditions.

Be careful if the pond pump remains in operation during wintertime. The layers of water are mixed while the protecting layer of water at the pond´s ground is cooled down due to the cold water on the surface. While the formation of ice on the surface can be avoided for a while, the pond inhabitants on the bottom of the pond are freezing to death because the water temperature drops below 4 °C. The flow should be as low as possible in those spots where the pond inhabitants have settled down for wintertime in order to prevent cold water from entering the quiet zone.

During wintertime immersion pumps should be stored protectively against frost. In winter, oxygen produced by e.g. the Canadian waterweed (Egeria densa) and hornwort plants are sufficient for the pond inhabitants in their resting position. It is useful to operate rather an oxydator or a pond ventilator than a pond pump. The pond water is supplied with fine bubbles of oxygen and putrefaction prevented.

Hibernation also means to refrain from any construction work nearby the pond. Otherwise the fish are troubled while their consumption on energy increases which in turn enhances the risk of a weak condition in spring and illness. In case the pond freezes you should avoid to break it open by tapping or the like. You better thaw the ice with a hair dryer or hot water.

In order to avoid an extreme cooling you can cover the pond by using various materials such polystyrene, polyethylene-balls, twin-wall sheets and more. However, the aforementioned measures should only apply for smaller ponds or in extreme weather conditions. In any case make sure that there is a small spot in the pond that remains uncovered. Said small space should be kept free of ice in order to provide the gas exchange. Moreover, the ice-free spot allows the observation of the pond inhabitants during wintertime thus making possible the immediate intervention in the event of any desease that might occur.

A pond heater in combination with a frost guard have proved to be the most effective and economical ones. The frost guard switches on the pond heater when the temperature is about 0°C thus avoiding the total freezing of the pond. Such systems are offered for example by Schego.

If possible, always keep checking the quality of the water during the winter. If the pond has been well maintained and cleaned in autumn there should be no problems in the course of winter. In winter fish should be fed only when there are continuously warm temperatures. Keep in mind that the food, if it is not eaten, could lead to a problem in spring since it affects the water quality.

Week 2 – Building project WilTec

Week 2 – Building project WilTec: Ground Works

The second week was marked by a bad weather, snow in early October in the region of Aachen, sleet at a height of 150 m above sea level, does that mean a bad sign with respect to the winter season or is it something of a freak of nature? Fortunately, there was no delay.

  • The ground works have been completed, the loading dock has been excavated.
  • The foundations for both warehouses have been excavated.
  • 60 m³ of concrete have been poured into the foundation trenches.

Shelving System – Planification of the storage place

The optimization of warehouse space is still – even in consideration of the significant increase in storage space – a subject. This is why we have opted again for a moveable shelving system. Moveable shelving systems are systems in which static shelving systems are installed on automated moveable carts.

We are already familiar with said system from Dexion with regard to our warehouse in Königsbenden 28. This type of shelving system makes it possible to close those aisles that are momentarily not in use, thereby optimizing the use of storage area and storage space respectively. You win a lot of space for the storage, thus avoiding significantly so-called “empty” passages.

Dexion Movo Wiltec Warehouse 3

The advantage resulting from the lack of these aisles makes a benefit in storage space of approximately 50% or, in other words – 100 % more capacity. Because of this fact the extra costs of this system are compensated within a short time.

The big disadvantage is the access to only one aisle while all other passages are closed up so that there is only one picker who has access to the storage area. However, this can be compensated by deviding the shelving system into several blocks thus creating more moveable aisles. In our plan, we have envisaged 4 aisles which makes us work with 4-8 pickers per shift at the same time..

If you furthermore take into consideration an optimization regarding the commissioning as integrated in the Warehouse Management software LAGOS W&E, we can “collect” any and all orders by only one “flow”. This intelligent control system compensates at the same time the lack of access to all pallet storages.

This is what 6.692 pallet storages look like in the new warehouse as designed below:

Stow Mobile Regal WilTec

So today, we have placed the order for the moveable shelving system with the company Stow Deutschland GmbH. The manufacturer must have reacted in a very early planning stage because the static as well as the size of the hall are decisive for the machine. The hall floors of these shelves are subjected to loads different to other conventional static shelves. When a cart is moved there are about 100 tons in motion. These dynamic loads have to be taken into consideration. This step of placing the order is also done now.

The structural engineer may calculate. We hear again from Stow Mobile upon delivery of the rails.
